This project showed originality with a strong symbolic depth and socio-cultural awareness. It showed flexibility where its elements could be arranged in a variety of ways. It also provided a visual embodiment of an abstract climatic occurrence which has tremendous socio - economic impact.

2nd Prize

This project's strength was in its ability to comply to its urban, historic, cultural and physical context. It has a realistic background and true constructibility.

3rd Prize

Ferdiansyah Dicky (Germany)
This project deals with a true issue of poverty-shelter. It also deals with the concept of creating a community and provides a flexibility of building typology. One element is used in different ways, and is easy to build without special skills. It is highly transportable. The system has the potential for looking for the best sustainable materials.

4th Prize
Union of Architects of Russia Prize (travel grant)
Han Yu (China)
Jing Pan Xi'an, Hao Wang Xi'an
This also deals with a realistic environmental issue of water while providing symbolic expression simultaneously. It creates a pleasant and functional micro-climate, much like an oasis. It also acts as a landmark for nomadic travel through dry regions. It also has pleasant aesthetics using local materials.

5th Prize
2,000 Euros, Patrick Nelli Prize, UIA French section
Siji Lv (China)
This totem is very poetic and has strong traditional and historical reflections.

6th Prize
$1,500 Louise Cox Prize
Huang Zheng (China)
Its multi-functionality was the strongest point, again dealing with important issues-water collection, protection and shelter. It needs however to be better integrated visually into the community.

7th Prize

Wolf Tochterman Prize

Guang Chao Meng, Su Ting Zou, Juan Li, Pu Zhi, Ting Ting Zhang
This structure concept provides a large variety of bridge typologies. And also shows the multiple possibilities of the use of bamboo. The socio-economical value of connecting and expanding communities is also valid.

This supports and encourages the environmentally friendly use of bicycles and is easy to build and use. It has the double function of rest and information.

Further prizes for the winners of TOTEM competition:
1.  Space Group, with the support of UNESCO Prize: 10 000 euro

2.  Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) Prize: 5000 US$

3.  Patrick Nelli Prize, awarded by the CIAF -  UIA French Section: 2000 euro. This prize will recompense one of the best entries in the framework of  "A natural context: sustainability": Info ecology.

4.  Louise Cox Prize: 1 500 US$

5.  Wolf Tochtermann Prize: 1000 euro

6.  Union of Architects of Russia Prize: 10 day trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg - all expenses covered, incl. return air tickets.

The CIAF, UIA French Section, offers the Patrick Nelli Prize, worth 2000 euros, to be assigned to one of the best projects in the framework of  "a natural context: sustainability".
